The Quotation Bank presents free weekly online UCAS Support webinars for English - online sessions to support and guide pupils in their applications to study English at university.
Open and free to all pupils, these live, interactive webinars not only help pupils with their applications, but hopefully break down myths and misinformation around English in all its forms, and the study of it at university.
Book now to secure your place!
Booking is free, but attendees must book each weekly session individually as places are limited.
Each week features a Question and Answer session where pupils can ask any questions you have to our experts.
The Quotation Bank UCAS English support webinars are designed to supplement school/college-based UCAS support - they will be interactive and discussion-based, and completely free to attend.
Sessions are designed for pupils looking to apply for all strands of English at university - however, teachers are also welcome to attend if you feel it would be of interest. We will, however, prioritise pupil questions over teachers if time runs short!
Weekly session timetable
Monday 9th September: 8pm-9pm
Personal Statements – what to include and how to structure them.
Led by one of the country’s most experienced school UCAS advisors, as well as experienced English Subject Advisors, this session will discuss what to include in a personal statement; the balance between curricular and wider-curricular material; how to tailor it to the courses and universities you are applying to; and how to create the impression of yourself you want to convey.
It will also provide clarification and details around ‘grade profiles’; A-Level subject choice combination myths; Firm and Insurance choices; and Joint Honours courses. There will also be an opportunity to ask about studying English abroad, what this may offer, and how the process of application is different.
Monday 16th September: 8pm-9pm
How to pick a course for me, at a university that suits my needs, and tailoring my application appropriately!
Special Guest will be Dr Iain Bailey, former English Teacher, Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Manchester, published writer, and UCAS Subject Advisor.
There are so many different types of English courses available, from English Literature to English Language; from Creative Writing to English plus another specialism; and that’s before we even think about what sort of university you might want to go to, and where in the country! Dr Bailey will discuss the many wonderful options available around the country, and take your questions on what sort of course might suit you. Iain will explore what type of course might best suit your interests and how to make an informed decision about university choice.
Monday 23rd September: 8pm-9pm
English at Oxford and Cambridge – they really do want you to apply!
We are delighted to welcome a Pupil Ambassador from University College, Oxford, direct from their Schools’ Access Team, to answer questions and give a full and frank picture of what Oxbridge is really like. The ambassador will be perfectly placed to answer your questions!
Oxford and Cambridge are two of the world’s greatest universities, but despite much progress, there are still many pupils who feel they shouldn’t apply or wouldn’t be welcome, when nothing is further from the truth!
We are thrilled to have a Pupil Ambassador from University College, Oxford (Univ) in this session to de-mystify the Oxbridge myths, de-bunk misinformation, and answer any questions you might have. Univ has a rich history of welcoming pupils from all walks of life, and they also have the brilliant ‘Staircase 12’ www.univ.ox.ac.uk/applying-to-univ/staircase12/- an online hub of free resources and information for pupils thinking about applying to top universities. Do check it out!
Monday 30th September: 8pm-9pm
Expanding your English subject knowledge outside the curriculum – how to take your UCAS Personal Statement beyond your classroom reading.
Carl Cerny, former Assistant Head, English teacher of 15 years, and author of The Quotation Bank: Death of A Salesman for A-Level, joins us to explore the incredible world of English you can explore, and how to use it to enhance your UCAS personal statement and showcase the real you.
Many university courses highlight papers and topics you can potentially study, and much of it may be completely new to you. So how do you make an informed decision about what courses interest you?
In this session, Carl will look at the canon of English Literature, from Old English to the modern day, through poetry, prose, drama and English Language, to give a greater understanding of where and how you could extend your knowledge and experiences, how you can access new materials, as well as helping you interpret what university courses are actually offering.
Monday 7th October: 8pm-9pm
UCAS applications and extra-curricular material – where can I find support to broaden my experiences?
You might be Head Prefect, Captain of the Hockey Team or President of the Charity Committee, but what about extra-curricular and wider experiences around your subject? To help you explore where and how you can indulge your English passions, this session looks at what opportunities are available to you to enhance your love of English, whether it be lectures, theatre or other visits.
Monday 14th October: 8pm-9pm
UCAS drop-in session ahead of Oxbridge deadline, and any other questions!
This session is an informal drop-in session – pupils who have booked are free to ask questions, get last minute reassurances if applying for Oxbridge, and chat with other pupils who may be looking to apply for English. It will be an informal session designed to reassure and put nerves at ease, and let people share their experiences of the application process so far, whether it be universities visited, courses found or subject choices chosen!
